The Real Cost of an E-Bike Isn't the Price Tag
Buying an electric bike, scooter, or board online is easy. A few clicks, a box shows up at your door, and you're riding by the weekend. The part nobody talks about is what happens three months later, when you get a flat on the way to work, a brake starts rubbing, or the display throws an error code you've never seen before.
That's the moment you find out what kind of company you actually bought from.
1. Every Electric Vehicle Needs Service. Every One.
Electric vehicles are machines with tires, brakes, bearings, cables, batteries, and electronics, and they get ridden hard: daily commutes, San Francisco hills, wet streets, gravel paths in Marin. Parts wear. Tires go flat. Brake pads wear down. Bolts loosen. That's not a sign you bought a bad bike, it's just what happens when you actually ride it.
The question isn't if your ride will need service. It's who's going to do it.
2. The "Sell It and Forget It" Problem
A lot of companies in this space are built to do one thing: move boxes. Their job ends when the tracking number says "delivered." When something goes wrong, here's what riders commonly run into:
- No one to call. Support is an email address or a chat bot, and replies take days, if they come at all.
- "Ship it back to us." Boxing up a 70 lb e-bike and paying freight to a warehouse across the country, then waiting weeks to get it back.
- No parts. The brand doesn't stock replacement tires, tubes, brake parts, or controllers, or they're back-ordered indefinitely.
- Regular bike shops won't touch it. Many traditional bike shops turn away e-bikes, scooters, and boards they didn't sell, especially hub-motor wheels and anything with a battery.
The end result is a vehicle you paid real money for sitting in the garage because nobody can change a tire on it. That's not a deal, no matter how low the price was.
π‘ Key insight: The cheapest ride is the one that keeps running. A slightly higher price from a shop that can service it is almost always cheaper than a bargain you can't get fixed.
3. What You Get When You Buy From a Shop That Fixes Things
Last Mile has been in the electric transportation business since 2002, with shops in San Francisco and San Rafael. We sell electric bikes, scooters, skateboards, Onewheels, and electric dirt bikes, and we service them too. That changes the whole ownership experience:
- A setup and check before you ride away. Your ride gets looked over by people who work on these every day, not pulled out of a box in your living room.
- Someone local when something goes wrong. Flat tire, rubbing brake, loose stem, weird noise: bring it in. No shipping it across the country.
- Parts on the shelf. We stock tires, tubes, brake pads, and spare parts for the brands we carry, so a repair doesn't turn into a month-long wait.
- Help with warranty claims. We work with the brands we carry, so you're not stuck going back and forth with a support inbox on your own.
- Honest advice. We'd rather tell you what you actually need than sell you something that doesn't fit how you ride. We'll be the ones fixing it later, after all.
4. Questions to Ask Before You Buy Anywhere
Whether you buy from us or someone else, ask these first:
- If I get a flat, where do I take it, and how long will it take?
- Do you stock replacement tires, tubes, and brake parts for this model?
- Who handles warranty repairs, and do I have to ship it?
- Is there a physical location near me with mechanics who work on this brand?
If the answers are "email us," "ship it back," or silence, you already know how the story ends.
Ride With Backup
An electric vehicle should make your life easier, not leave you stranded on the side of the road with a flat and no one to call. Come see us in San Francisco or San Rafael, check out our service and repair rates, or find the shop nearest you. We'll help get you rolling again.
